One of the first plants I was ever able to keep alive for more than a few months was a Peace Lily. I find them to be beautiful as well as easy to grow. They are poisonous to cats and dogs so keep them a safe distance from the animals.
I just love the fullness of the Dieffenbachia. (I love the name too!) They are hardy, tropical and the darkness of the leaves keeps the air purified.
If you are looking for a taller plant to fill a space on the floor, you cannot go wrong with a Bamboo Palm. They will grow as tall as you allow them to grow based on the size of your pot. They are a good source for removing formaldehyde from the air.
Last, but not least, you can grow a Pineapple Plant from the top of one you buy at the grocery store. They have long green leaves and the added benefit of flowers and fruit. They will need some sunlight but not much water.
